Introduction

In September, 1980, a year after I graduated from college, I made a solo trip to Africa and traveled around there for almost 3 months. My grandiose plan was to start in Casablanca, cross the Sahara, do a safari in Kenya and travel the length of the Nile. Well, it didn't work out that way, but that was part of the adventure.

Why did I do it? (All my friends asked at the time.) I had the idea that within a few years I would be tied down with a career and family and unable to do something like this and would always regret it if I hadn't. And 28 years later, I know that I was absolutely right.

I didn't bring a camera on the trip, but I did bring a notebook and this is the journal that I kept. I've "borrowed" other people's pictures to illustrate the types of things I saw.
